Muscatine Recycling Center and Transfer Station will try recycling prom dresses
When it comes to recycling, Laura Liegois is doing more than talking the talk and walking the walk.She’s throwing in some dance steps, too.Liegois, the solid waste manager for Muscatine Recycling Center and Transfer Station, said her facility is trying out an idea for local prom-goers that’s “outside the box.”In an effort to help families that have taken a hit from the economy, the facility will be giving away prom dresses that people donate.“We’re asking for dresses that haven’t been on dates in a while,” Liegois said.
From 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 14, members of the community are encouraged to donate prom or formal dresses that are in good condition. Dresses can be dropped off at the recycling center, 1000 S. Houser St.The dresses will be given out on a first-come, first-serve basis from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 11, at the Muscatine Recycling Center in the upstairs conference room.Liegois stressed that the donated dresses, while not right off the rack, will still have to pass muster before they’ll be given out.
“If we receive something that we believe is not suitable, we won’t put it out,” Liegois said.There is no cost for the dresses. Liegois is encouraging Louisa-Muscatine and Muscatine high school students to come out and see if there is something that will work for them.“We’re about recycling and we normally wouldn’t get into the clothing business,” Liegois said. “This is a one-time event and if it’s successful we’ll continue to do it in the future.”
The idea, Liegois said, came from conversations with friends who have daughters in high school and have been affected by the economy. She said several of the girls are already excited about the idea.“Used clothing has become more popular recently with the tough economic situations for families,” Liegois said. “You also have a population of people that like vintage things that might be interested.”
And, if Liegois can convince some local businesses to get into the prom spirit, there will also be a drawing on pick-up day, with the winner receiving gift certificates from local salons.
“We are also accepting items such as hair appointments, manicures, make-up, and other items that are part of the prom scene,” Liegois said. “If a business would like to donate for the drawing for the girls who come to the Recycle the Dress event, they can contact me.”

For one day last week, the Diamond Ballroom at Hong Kong’s new Ritz-Carlton hotel was turned into a lecture hall. The audience was a small group of media and die-hard foodies, and the speaker was Ferran Adrià, the man behind Spain’s famed El Bulli restaurant and the world’s most influential chef.

He was dressed in a white jacket with gray slacks and black dress shoes, but he wasn’t giving a cooking demonstration. Instead, the 49-year-old Catalan pontificated like a philosophy professor on the existential nature of cuisine.

“When does a tomato taste like a tomato?” Mr. Adria asked. Is it when you cut it and put salt on it? Is tomato sauce natural? He considered several other ingredients the same way too, pondering the hypothetical problem of creating a pastry made of strawberries. “All of cuisine is an elaboration,” he said.

At El Bulli, Mr. Adria was a pioneer of molecular gastronomy ― a term he disdainfully describes as “marketing.” The three-Michelin-star restaurant, which ranked No. 1 on Restaurant Magazine’s World’s 50 Best Restaurants a record five times over the past decade, was legendary for its deconstructionist and experimental cuisine.

Then, in July, at the height of El Bulli’s powers, Mr. Adria closed the eatery where he had first become head chef in the mid-1980s.

Which brings us to Hong Kong. It’s a mark of the celebrity nature of chefs these days that Mr. Adria was touring Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong courtesy of the Spanish tourism board, in the hopes of generating interest among Chinese travelers. It was his second visit to China, and he said he hopes to spend more time there ― studying Chinese cuisine, of course.

“I’m more interested in finding out why dairy products aren’t used in a dish than the dish itself,” he said in an interview. “Why do they [the Chinese] put all the dishes in the middle of the table? Why do they cook vegetables so quickly but fish for so long? Why are there a lot more hot dishes than cold dishes in Chinese cuisine?”

Mr. Adria’s long-term project is a new culinary foundation, which is scheduled to open in 2014 on the site of his former restaurant. It will host a rotating group of 20 chefs who will visit for months at a time. Alongside Mr. Adrià, they will create new dishes and work on different approaches to cooking.

Nfl New England Patriots Defeat The Sliding New York Jets

The New York Jets were supposed to be a strong team this season. They had the right ingredients; they even had the experience gained from a well-played previous season. But from the beginning of the season, it has been quite a disaster. The Jet’s quarterback, Mark Sanchez is not really fine-tuning his game and although there is more then one culprit behind the Jet’s 2-3 season, most eyes are set on him.

Tom Brady and the Patriots were simply a little too much for the Jets to handle and with a good overall teamwork they managed to crush the Jets on Sunday, in yet another chapter of their fierce rivalry. It really doesn’t matter where or how you look at this team, it’s hard not to get feeling of underachievement. It’s not as if these guys had the expectations of, let’s say, the Philadelphia Eagles set upon them, but this is just not what we have come to expect from Rex Ryan and his team. The Jets couldn’t really make the numbers work, not even against a defense as soft as the Patriots’. Let’s get this straight here: The New England Patriots are 4-1 for the season, but it is not because of its solid defense. As a matter of fact, the Patriots had allowed an average of 477,5 yards per game this season.

That’s the highest percentage in the league. Still, the Patriots managed to hold back Mark Sanchez and the Jets to 16 of 26 passing for 166 yards and two touchdowns. These are just not a good number for Sanchez. Particularly for a guy who was coming off a 119 yard game against the Baltimore Ravens. Needless to say, the Ravens took advantage of this poor performance and served the Jets’ its second consecutive loss 34-17. The following week it would be the Patriots giving the Jets its third consecutive loss while defending their home-field winning streak. This is the New England Patriots 19th consecutive regular season win at home. It was an overall clean and well-played out game for the Patriots. BenJarvus Green-Ellis rushed for a career-high 136 yards and two touchdowns.

That’s quite an accomplishment for a running back that nobody drafted and was picked as a free agent from Missouri. For a change of pace, the Patriots defense finally got its act together and allowed a season-low 255. On the other end, Tom Brady threw for 321 after starting the day with an NFL-best 388 yards passing per game. Brady was at his best on Sunday. He completed 24 of 33 attempts for 321 yards with 1 touchdown and 1 interception. Ok, the interception wasn’t really a sign of Brady at his best. But let’s consider for a moment that this was his first regular-season red-zone interception at home in his career.

On a separate note, the New York Jets Jets WR Plaxico Burress had three catches for 42 yards in his first game against the Patriots since catching the winning touchdown pass in the final minute of the New York Giants’ 17-14 Super Bowl win over New England in Feb. 2008. Finally he’s starting to show some good signs of getting his game back after spending little under two years behind bars.

NRL: Slaimankhel returns for Junior Warriors

Junior Warriors fullback Omar Slaimankhel returns from injury for Sunday’s NYC grand final against North Queensland at ANZ Stadium.

Slaimankhel missed his first game of the season when a hamstring injury kept him out of last week’s preliminary final against Canterbury-Bankstown but has been cleared to play this weekend.

Also a chance of coming back into the side is the club’s NYC Player of the Year, John Palavi, who was originally named to play against the Bulldogs before being ruled out later.

The 19-year-old has been included on an extended bench as the Junior Warriors look to go back-to-back by winning the Toyota Cup in consecutive years.

After dominating the regular season to win the minor premiership, they overwhelmed their opponents in their two play-offs to reach their second grand final, first dismissing Newcastle 54-6 and then a 64-0 shutout – a record winning margin in the NYC – of the Bulldogs last Saturday night.

While they have amassed 118 points and conceded only six in two matches, coach John Ackland and his players know the Cowboys are a much sterner proposition.

Earlier this season they had a big 42-22 win over the Vodafone Junior Warriors in Townsville – one of only four defeats this year – while in the return in the final round of the regular season the Junior Warriors had to recover from a 0-16 deficit to win 28-20 in Auckland.

“They Cowboys are a very good side,” Ackland said. “They’ve got great halves and some big and talented forwards. It’ll be a real test for us.”

The Cowboys also advanced to week three of the finals after a comfortable 48-26 win over Wests Tigers in their first play-off. Last week they beat Cronulla 38-14, with winger Kyle Feldt scoring 22 points from three tries and five goals.

Slaimankhel has been the competition’s leading try scorer most of the season with 27 tries in 25 games and Palavi’s workrate and try-scoring capacity – 10 tries in 22 games – earned him the top accolade this year.

In beating the Bulldogs last weekend, the Junior Warriors lifted their season’s points tally to 969 in 26 matches – an average of 37 a game – and will break the 1000 barrier if they can match that standard.

As many as 11 players will be eligible for next year’s NYC while five were in last year’s premiership-winning side.

Sugar Bowl made improper campaign donations

The Sugar Bowl acknowledged it made several campaign donations to then-Gov. Kathleen Blanco of Louisiana in the mid-2000s — in violation of federal tax law — and a group has filed a complaint about the matter with the IRS.

Sugar Bowl spokesman John Sudsbury said Tuesday that bowl representatives mistakenly bought tickets for fundraising dinners for the Democratic governor in 2004 and 2006, totaling $3,000. He said the bowl found records of the donations, which were first documented by HBO’s “Real Sports,” part of a segment on the “bowl game money trail” set to air Tuesday night.

But Louisiana campaign records reviewed by The Associated Press list Sugar Bowl donations to Blanco in 2004, 2005 and 2006, totaling $5,000. The bowl said that its auditors have concluded the report of the 2005 donation is inaccurate.

Playoff PAC, which wants college football to switch to a playoff system to determine the national championship, said it had filed a complaint with the IRS late Monday. In another complaint filed last year, Playoff PAC alleged that the Fiesta, Orange and Sugar bowls violated their tax-exempt status by inappropriate spending and other activities. The bowls — along with the Rose Bowl — are the premier postseason college football games and rotate hosting the Bowl Championship Series title game.

Earlier this year, the Fiesta Bowl fired its president after an investigation detailed lavish spending and reimbursements to employees for campaign donations in Arizona.

The newest revelation about the Sugar Bowl, said PAC co-founder Matthew Sanderson, “makes our point: that all of these BCS bowls should be subject to an independent and credible review.”

The Sugar Bowl is a nonprofit charitable organization that receives state subsidies, and Sudsbury said bowl policy prohibits participation in any political campaign. Federal tax law also bans tax-exempt charities from participating in politics.

“We have already brought this matter to the attention of the IRS, and we will fully cooperate with them to successfully resolve this matter,” he said in a statement.

Sudsbury said that the campaign has refunded the donations, which the bowl will donate to charity.

Small Bedford clothing store to close after 64 years
D. Reynolds Men’s Clothing Store will mark its 64th anniversary at its South Bridge Street location in downtown on Nov. 14.But by the end of December, the store will be closed.
Store Manager Ruth Crouch, who has been at the store for 48 years, since July 1963, said a decline in customers is the reason for closing. She said other businesses like Wal-Mart are keeping people away from downtown Bedford.
“People don’t come to downtown because there’s not much in downtown,” she said.
The business was started in 1947 by the Reynolds brothers, Crouch said. The store was actually two stores at the time and the brothers put a door in the wall between them. The brothers had a falling out in 1959 and the door was removed.One side, owned by Dawson Reynolds, was D. Reynolds clothing and the other was Alex’s Shoe Store.
Dawson Reynolds bought out his brother’s shoe business in 1966 and the store became one again, Crouch said. In April 1976, Carl Wells bought the store from Reynolds on the condition that Crouch would run the store.She said the store has always had the best products, from business professional to workman’s clothes and a wide selection of shoes.
“I’ve always tried to keep it neat and clean,” Crouch said.Bedford Area Chamber of Commerce President Susan Martin said more people are going to larger stores and malls, forgoing the service that places like D. Reynolds provides.
“We’re very saddened to see something that has been around for so long and provided such great service to the community have to close its doors after so many years,” Martin said. “When you see something like that close, it’s like a piece of Bedford has been lost.”She said D. Reynolds was a place downtown where teens could get tuxedos for prom and had services like alterations from a staff seamstress. Martin said people of Bedford would have to look outside the city for those needs.“Those are a lot of the services I think we’re going to be missing,” she said.
Assistant City Manager and D. Reynolds customer Bart Warner said Crouch takes a special interest in very customer who comes through the door.“Obviously we’d like to keep them here,” Warner said. “They’re basically an institution in town. They’ll certainly be missed.”Crouch said she does alterations at night and will continue to do that, as well as continue to participate in many other community activities.She’s known around the city as “Pie Lady” for the number of pies she contributes to the community � 2,100 in the last 10 years.
